The President of the International Union of Notaries, David Figueroa Márquez, took part in the Belgian Notaries’ Congress “Inside.AI 26”, held in Kortrijk Xpo on 17 and 18 September 2026.
Opened by the Minister of Justice, Ms Annelies Verlinden, the Congress addressed artificial intelligence in all its dimensions: global overview and societal challenges, ethical and philosophical questions, impact on notarial software and access to data, dialogue with major technology players, practical applications for day-to-day practice, and the presentation of innovative solutions for the profession.
Speaking at the opening session, UINL President recalled the close ties between the UINL and the Belgian notariat, one of its founding members in 1948. He then presented the conclusions of Topic I of the 31st International Congress of Notaries (Berlin, 2025), which focused in particular on automation and artificial intelligence: the opportunities these technologies offer the profession and, ultimately, citizens; the risks they entail; and the guiding principle adopted in Berlin, “human in command”. Artificial intelligence must support the notary, not replace them, and final responsibility always rests with the notary.
