On June 19, 2026, the International Union of Notaries (UINL) had the honor of participating in the symposium organized at Aix-Marseille University, dedicated to the theme “The Notary Facing Estate Settlement Challenges in Private International Law.” A major event bringing together academics, French and foreign notaries, and international experts around the complex issues of cross-border legal situations.
This symposium, organized notably by Élodie Oosterlinck, Director of the INFN Aix-en-Provence, and Élodie Letouche, notary in Aix-en-Provence, addressed key issues: plurality of civil and tax sources, international circulation of deeds, management of assets located abroad, mutability of matrimonial regimes, and estate settlement challenges.
Strong UINL Mobilization
The UINL was represented by Elena Bevilacqua, Director of the UINL, Sophie Potentier Rios, UINL Advisor, Élodie Letouche, Notary in Aix-en-Provence, Youssra Hajjam, Notary in Rabat (Morocco), Naivi Chikoc Barreda, Professor at the University of Ottawa (Canada), Nigel Ready, Scrivener Notary in London, Valentina Rubertelli, Notary in Italy and President of the UINL European Affairs Commission.
Their contributions provided valuable comparative insights through practical case studies illustrating English, Moroccan, and Italian law, as well as the civil and tax challenges related to the coordination of legal systems.
An Essential International Dialogue
This gathering confirmed the importance of ongoing dialogue between notariats to address the growing challenges of the mobility of persons and assets.
