News "We firmly believe in the construction of peace by the notaries" - inauguration of the UINL institutional meetings in Veracruz (Mexico) by the Secretaria de Gobernación
18/05/2019 The UINL institutional meetings were held in Mexico from May 15 to 18, 2019, in the state of Veracruz, where the first notarial act was written 500 years ago. "(...) the notaries have been present in the very origins of (the) country. Thus, on April 21, 1519, the date on which the notary Diego de Godoy testified to the founding of Villa Rica de Vera Cruz by Hernán Cortés, marks the establishment of the notarial institution in Mexico." (see Colegio de Notarios de la Ciudad de Mexico)
For these meetings, Dr. Olga Sánchez Cordero, Secretaria de Gobernación (Interior Ministry), participated in the Opening Ceremony. Before becoming a magistrate, Minister of the Court, Senator of the Republic, constituent, and now Interior Ministry, she was the first woman notary of Mexico City (see link).
She gave a very strong speech in favor of the defense of preventive justice and the civil law system of Roman tradition of which the notary is a fundamental pillar. In this regard, she reaffirmed that "the law gathers culture, language, relations, politics and the social environment."
She invited notaries to work hand in hand with the government. Notaries "are guardians of peace, because whoever safeguards the principles of legality and legal security is a peacebuilder" insisted the one in charge of the country's internal policy.
The president of the International Union of Notaries, José Marqueño de Llano, in his own opening speech, thanked Dra. Olga Sánchez Cordero for her presence and stressed the importance for the notarial function to have the support of public authorities, "in short, we, notaries, (...) are one more arm of this public power" at the service of all citizens.
The opening ceremony also included messages from the Minister Cuitláhuac García Jiménez, Constitutional Governor of the State of Veracruz, Notary Armando Javier Prado Delgado, President of the National Notary Association (Mexico A.C) and Notary Fernando Trueba Buenfil, Vice-President of North America, Center and Caribbean of the UINL.
